Kienemusik in Ibiza: What do we do about cell phones?
Recently, a few friends and I have been planning a trip to the house club capital of the world, Ibiza. When planning this trip, I’ve been looking into the different clubs on the island, not least of which is the world renowned HI Ibiza, one of the most famous clubs rivaling Space in Miami and KitKat in Berlin. Scrolling through their instagram page, I was looking at the famous DJs that play there on a nightly basis. DJs like Fisher, David Guetta, Solomun, and the one that stood out to me the most, Keinemusik. The German Afrohouse trio is one of the most well known groups in the house music scene, but they are a polarizing bunch. Keinemusik themselves is best saved for another article considering the very strong feelings many possess about them, but what really grabbed my attention was the crowd. In front of the decks was a dystopian wall of cellphones, nobody dancing, and a general lack of energy from everyone in attendance and this got me thinking about cellphones in clubs. Now before you go running to the comment section, yes, I do realize this point has been driven into the ground and before you say I should let people be and mind my own business, hear me out.
Cellphones permeate most aspects of our lives at this point, and I totally understand wanting to take videos to share with friends and post on instagram but, there's a difference between a club and a concert. The way I see it, you go to a concert to see an artist, and you go to a club to be at the club. Duh, right? Let me explain. Concerts are an awesome opportunity to see your favorite artist, take videos, and have fun with friends. In a club, however, the artist is more supplemental to the overall experience. You go to a club to have some drinks, dance, enjoy the music, and have a fun night. The issue comes in when the crowd starts to treat the club like a concert, and instead of enjoying the entirety of the establishment, club goers monopolize the artist and neglect the rest of the experience. This is a persistent issue in most subgenres in EDM, and seeing videos from Ibiza 10 years ago vs today is a night and day difference. So my final thought to you is to take a quick video, put your phone back in your pocket, and enjoy the music.
